There are social problems such as gambling, alcoholism and prostitution. Told with humor the story gave me a peek of the wealth and decline of morals in the mid-1800’s. There are some characters who may or may not have benefitted from exorcisms from the local priests. The author has included several characters well written such as twelve year old Boo. Perhaps she is a demon? Or is she? Will Dexter make his fortune? Dexter has fallen for a lady Leslie Reed who doesn’t really seem like a woman. He claimed to be well educated in this work and has cast off demons, devils, spirits, spooks and so forth. He hopes to become wealthy through his work. Dexter James is a self proclaim demonologist (also known as exorcist). People went to Titusville in hopes of becoming wealthy too. Men have struck an underground river of oil becoming wealthy. In any case, this is my review and, I'm sticking to it.ĭuring the mid-1800s In Titusville, Pennsylvania (tiny village) oil has become the “new” religion. There was something perversely human in not knowing what happened to Dex. In re-reading, I might be inclined to skip ahead a bit to where things start to happen and perhaps skip the very end. There is enough going on to warrent a re-read. It does not sugar-coat views, but if you enjoy literature over entertainment, you'll find this a very good read. In the end, I had to honestly say, this might be a tough read for some. I sat on my review for a day or two, wanting to see what distilled. Afterall, most readers want that 'happy ending'. I felt, Kanicki sold out at the very end to bring about closure. We bumped up to 4 stars from 3.īut it was the deft handling of the rest of the story that had me staying up all night to read "There are no saints". ![]() That adds a layer of intrigue to the story that was pleasantly surprising. You could feel the author setting you up with all the 'cliches' & esoteric theological dialogue & references. I'm an avid reader, so I've read thousands of books in my life & this still managed to keep me engaged.Īs the plot thickens, a few short chapters in, things began to pick up. And, the character development was solid. The voice on par for the period in history Kanicki sought to capture. ![]() The only thing that kept me turning pages, was the writing. In some respects, the beginning was, well, boring. ![]() Rec'd Digital copy via #goodreadsgiveaway for an honest review.
